Devgad Fort
Devgad Taluka, Maharashtra, India
Devgad Fort, also called Janjira Devgad Fort, is located in Devgad town in Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra, at the confluence of the Arabian Sea and Devgad Creek.
Built in 1705 by the Maratha naval commander Kanhoji Angre, this 120-acre sea fort was strategically used as a surveillance center to protect the Konkan coast and maritime trade routes. The fort is surrounded by water on three sides and features well-preserved walls, bastions, three old cannons, a Ganesh temple, and a 15-meter-high lighthouse constructed in 1915 to assist navigation.
It withstood attacks by British Naval forces under Commander Walter Brown and eventually came under British control in 1818. Today, visitors enjoy panoramic views of the Arabian Sea, the harbor, and the nearby Devgad beach, making it a popular historic and scenic destination. The fort highlights the Maratha naval strength and the coastal heritage of the region.
