Verified Dewstow House

Wales, United Kingdom

Dewstow House is a modest early‑19th‑century villa near Caldicot in Monmouthshire, southeast Wales, notable far more for its extraordinary gardens than for the house itself.

It sits on a low rise with views toward the Severn Estuary and is a Grade II listed building, but its main claim to fame is a Grade I‑listed landscape that includes one of the most unusual and elaborate underground garden systems in Wales.

The grounds contain a network of hidden tunnels, grottoes, ponds, and rock‑work created by the James Pulham & Sons landscaping firm, originally built in the late 19th century, buried after the Second World War, and later rediscovered and restored.

These so‑called “grotto gardens” feature artificial caverns, top‑lit chambers, and intricate rock‑like structures that once criss‑crossed beneath the surface in a way no longer open to the public, giving Dewstow an almost fairy‑tale reputation among garden and heritage enthusiasts in the region.
