Dindigul Rock Fort
Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, India
Dindigul Rock Fort, also known as Dindigul Malai Kottai, is a historic hill fort located in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. It was built in the early 17th century by the Madurai Nayakar king Muthu Krishnappa Nayakar and later came under the control of various powers including the Kingdom of Mysore under Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, before being taken over by the British during the Polygar Wars.
The fort is perched atop a 270 to 280-foot-high rock hill and features impressive military architecture with double walls, strategically placed cannons, and well-ventilated rooms used to house soldiers and prisoners. It also includes ruins of temples such as the Abirami Amman Kalaheswarar Temple, granaries, water tanks, and storerooms carved into the rock.
Visitors can climb about 350 steps to the top to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding city, farmland, nearby hills, and even distant Kodaikanal Hills. The fort is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and, despite some neglect, serves as a notable landmark reflecting the military, cultural, and architectural heritage of the region.
It remains a popular tourist destination combining history, spirituality, and scenic beauty in one site.
