Diu Fort
Diu, India
Diu Fort, located on the island of Diu in India, is a massive 16th-century Portuguese fortress built between 1535 and 1546 following a defense alliance with the Sultan of Gujarat against Mughal invasions.
The fort is surrounded by the sea on three sides and features a double moat cut through sandstone rocks for added protection. It has thick walls with bastions mounted with cannons and includes three main gates, a lighthouse, barracks, warehouses, a church, and a chapel now in ruins. The fortress was strategically important for protecting Portuguese trade routes and military control in the region.
Today, it stands well preserved with many original cannons and offers spectacular views of the sea and the nearby Panikota Fort. The fort is a significant historical landmark reflecting the military architecture and colonial history of Portuguese India.
