Droog Fort
Tamil Nadu, India
Droog Fort, also known as Bakasura Malai, is a historic fort located about 15 kilometers from Coonoor in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu.
Built in the 18th century, it served as a strategic military outpost used by Tipu Sultan to monitor the surrounding kingdoms. Positioned at an altitude of around 6,000 feet, the fort offers panoramic views of the lush valleys, tea plantations, and hills of the Western Ghats.
Today, although mostly in ruins with only one main wall and a watchtower remaining, it attracts trekkers, nature lovers, and history enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy the scenic trek through Nonsuch Tea Estate leading to the fort, and the area is also known for birdwatching due to its diverse avian population.
The fort is steeped in local legend, linked to the demon Bakasura, which adds to its mystique. Despite its ruined state, Droog Fort remains a captivating site, combining historical significance with natural beauty.
