East Caicos
UK, United Kingdom
East Caicos is the fourth-largest and easternmost island in the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the Atlantic Ocean's Lucayan Archipelago, located between Middle Caicos and South Caicos.
Covering about 90 square kilometers with extensive ponds, swamps, mangroves, savannas, and its highest point at Flamingo Hill (48 meters), this uninhabited island serves as a vital biodiversity hotspot home to flamingos, piping plovers, endemic plants, and ancient Lucayan petroglyphs in northwest caves, plus remnants of 19th-century sisal plantations, cattle ranches, guano mining, a lost town called Jacksonville, and an abandoned railway.
Part of a Ramsar-protected wetland reserve, it features pristine coral reefs, tidal flats, and tropical dry forest, drawing conservation focus amid past development proposals like a mega-port that were ultimately rejected to preserve its natural sanctuary status.
