East London is the part of London, England, lying east of the historic City of London and north of the River Thames, gradually broadening into the wider eastern suburbs of the capital.

It grew historically as London’s main docklands and industrial zone, with river‑front shipbuilding, docks, and factories driving dense working‑class neighbourhoods that later became known as the East End.

Today, many of those old industrial and dock areas are being redeveloped into modern business districts such as Canary Wharf, while much of East London remains a culturally diverse, artist‑friendly area with a mix of historic streets, parks, and newer housing.

Administratively, it typically covers several London boroughs including Tower Hamlets, Newham, Hackney, Waltham Forest, Redbridge, Havering, and Barking and Dagenham.
