Verified Edinburgh of the Seven Seas

St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha territory, United Kingdom

Edinburgh of the Seven Seas is the only settlement on the remote island of Tristan da Cunha, part of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha. It is known as the most isolated permanent settlement in the world, lying in the South Atlantic Ocean approximately 1,514 miles from its nearest neighbor, Saint Helena.

The village was founded in 1816 by a small group of settlers who stayed after a British naval garrison left the island. Today, around 250 to 270 people live there, making it a close-knit community largely dependent on subsistence farming, fishing, and periodic supplies brought by visiting ships. The community has a unique culture shaped by its isolation, with limited contact with the outside world and a lifestyle that is self-sustaining.

Access to the island is limited, and modern communication and transport remain challenging, preserving its remote charm and way of life.
