Verified Elgandal Fort

Telangana, India

Elgandal Fort, also known as Veligundula, is a historic hillfort situated on the banks of the Manair River near Karimnagar in Telangana. Built during the Kakatiya dynasty between 1083 and 1323, the fort served as a stronghold for warrior groups like the Musunuri Nayaks.

It later came under the control of the Qutb Shahi dynasty in the 16th century, followed by the Mughal Empire and the Nizams of Hyderabad. The fort is known for its robust defensive structure, including a moat once filled with crocodiles, and was strengthened significantly in the 18th century during the reign of Sikandar Jah. Architectural highlights include large archways, minarets, water tanks, and several mosques, reflecting a blend of styles from the region's successive rulers.

Historically, Elgandal was an important military and administrative center and served as the headquarters of Karimnagar until 1905. Today, it is a popular heritage site offering picturesque views, historical ruins, and insights into the rich cultural tapestry of Telangana.
