Enniscorthy Castle
Enniscorthy, Ireland
Enniscorthy Castle in Ireland is a Norman stronghold originally built in the 1190s by the French Norman knight Philip De Prendergast and his wife Maud.
It served as a residence for their descendants until the 1370s when Art MacMurrough Kavanagh captured the castle to reclaim his ancestral lands, with the MacMurrough Kavanagh family holding it until 1536. The castle was partly burned in 1569 but refurbished in the late 16th century by Sir Henry Wallop during the Elizabethan plantations.
Over the centuries, Enniscorthy Castle was involved in numerous conflicts including occupation by Cromwellian forces in 1649 and use as a prison during the 1798 Rebellion. In the 20th century, it became the Roche family residence until 1951, and today it houses the Wexford County Museum, featuring exhibitions on the castle’s history, the 1798 Rebellion, and local industrial heritage.
The castle's distinctive features include late 16th-century architectural details and medieval wall art in the dungeon. It offers visitors panoramic views of Enniscorthy and the Slaney River from its rooftop battlements.
