Ercolano is a town in Campania, Italy, near Naples, most famous for the archaeological site of Herculaneum, an ancient Roman city that was buried and remarkably preserved by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

Unlike Pompeii, Herculaneum was covered by pyroclastic flows that helped preserve buildings, mosaics, frescoes, and organic materials such as wood and papyrus, providing an exceptional view of Roman daily life. The archaeological park attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The modern town includes notable landmarks like the Basilica of Santa Maria a Pugliano and the elegant "Golden Mile" (Il Miglio d’Oro) lined with 18th-century aristocratic villas. Ercolano also houses the Osservatorio Vesuviano, the world’s oldest volcano observatory established in 1841.
