Ferial Garden
El Sharq, Egypt, Egypt
Ferial Garden (also called Al-Ferial or Feryal Garden) is a historic public park in the Al-Sharq district of Port Said, Egypt, covering about 21,904 square meters and serving as a lush green oasis amid the city’s residential, commercial, and institutional buildings.
Inaugurated in 1869 on the same day as the Suez Canal’s opening, it was named for Princess Ferial, the eldest daughter of King Farouk, and has long hosted dignitaries such as Empress Eugenie of France and Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria. The garden features lush lawns, flower beds, tree-lined avenues with rare 70–100-year-old trees (including Camphor, Cottonwood, and Bald Cypress), public art, seating areas, and a distinctive red windmill at its center alongside murals depicting Port Said’s history.
Once neglected, it was restored by the governorate and became a model for Port Said’s “Gardens without Fences” initiative, meaning it has no perimeter fence and is easily accessible to all. Today it functions as a community hub—especially for women with children—and hosts cultural events, offering tourists and residents a tranquil place to unwind with scenic views overlooking the Suez Canal at the meeting point of the city’s main boulevards.
