The Firs Botanical Grounds in Manchester trace their history back to 1887 when the estate was bequeathed by inventor Sir Joseph Whitworth to the University of Manchester.

The grounds have since evolved into an important research and education site featuring the Firs Environmental Research Station, a state-of-the-art greenhouse facility, and the university's Living Plant Collection. The site includes various glasshouse biomes, outdoor experimental gardens, a moss house with ancient bryophyte collections, and an orchard focused on food and energy security research.

It plays a key role in studying plant biology, environmental issues like air quality, and plant diseases such as the Rubbery Wood Virus affecting fruit trees. Although primarily a research center, The Firs also offers educational programs and community engagement opportunities, and while it currently operates by appointment, it aims to achieve full botanical garden status. This historic yet innovative green space provides valuable contributions to biodiversity, botany, and environmental sciences in Manchester.
