Fort St. Anthony of Simbor
Kheda, India
Fort St. Anthony of Simbor is a small, ruined Portuguese colonial fort built in 1722 on an islet at the mouth of the Sahil River (known as Vançoso to the Portuguese) in Simbor Bay, about 25 km east of Diu near Kheda in Gujarat, India.
Constructed to counter Sanganian pirate attacks along the Arabian Sea coast, particularly in the Gulf of Cambay, it housed a garrison of around 30 soldiers and later included a chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua.
Accessible by boat from the mainland, preferably at low tide, it served as one of the last Portuguese outposts in India until 1961, now featuring weathered stone walls and a rectangular layout amid serene coastal views.
