Fort Tiracol
Tiracol, Goa, India
Fort Tiracol, located on the northern bank of the Tiracol River in Goa, India, was originally built in the 17th century by Maharaja Khem Sawant Bhonsle of Sawantwadi as a strategic defense point overseeing the Arabian Sea.
The fort was captured by the Portuguese in 1746 after a fierce battle, who extensively renovated and fortified it, naming it Forte de São Francisco Xavier in honor of their patron saint. Its architecture features thick laterite stone walls, bastions with turrets, narrow passages, staircases leading to multiple chambers, and a small chapel dedicated to St. Anthony.
The fort played a significant role in maritime defense and witnessed various conflicts up until the 20th century. Today, it has been converted into a heritage hotel that preserves much of its original architecture and charm, offering panoramic views of the sea and river, and serving as a monument to the layered history of Goan, Maratha, and Portuguese influences.
