Verified Gadgada Fort (Ghargad)

Dahegaon, Maharashtra, India

Gadgada Fort, also known as Ghargad Fort, is located near Dahegaon in Maharashtra's Nashik district and is part of the Amboli hill range.

The fort sits about 3,035 feet above sea level and stretches across six acres from east to west. Its history is not extensively documented, but it is known to have come under Shivaji Maharaj's control during his reign between 1670-72 and was captured by Shankaraji Keshav Sabnis in 1748. Later, British forces captured it in 1818.

The path to the fort is challenging as the original footpath was destroyed by the British, making mountaineering skills essential for reaching it. The fort features ruins of a north-facing gate, guard porches, water cisterns filled with water, a temple of Goddess Bhavani in a cave at the foothills, an Ashram, and a Hanuman temple on the fort plateau.

Steep steps carved into the rock lead from a small Ganesh temple near a lake to the temple on the fort, and climbing can involve using ropes due to difficult terrain. Gadgada Fort is mostly in ruins, overgrown with grass, and offers scenic views of nearby dams and hills, serving historically as a significant surveillance fortification in the region
