Gagangad Fort
Maharashtra, India
Gagangad Fort, built in 1190 by Raja Bhoj of the Shilahara dynasty, is located in Gaganbawda in Kolhapur district, Maharashtra. It was strategically constructed to oversee the trade routes through the Konkan ports and the nearby Karul and Bhuibawada ghats.
The fort, situated in dense forest within the Western Ghats, features two main sections, the Machi and the citadel, with deep valleys and water bodies visible from its bastions. It has historical significance through various rulers, including the Yadavas, Bahamani, Adilshahi Sultanate, and later Maratha control under Shivaji Maharaj in 1658.
The fort is also known for the Gagangiri Maharaj monastery and has remained a spiritual site attracting many visitors. Though partly in ruins, the fort is protected as a state monument and offers scenic views with a trekable path from the base village.
