Galana Fort
Maharashtra, India
Galna Fort, located in Malegaon taluka of Nashik district, Maharashtra, is a historic hill fort built in the 13th century by the Rathod dynasty of Baglan.
It was strategically important on the Burhanpur-Surat trade route and features strong fortifications including four major gateways named Parkot, Lokhandi, Kotval Pir, and Lakha. The fort’s architecture reflects Rajasthani influence, with thick walls, semi-circular bastions, and a mosque topped with six small domes that offers panoramic views from its carved stone balcony.
Galna Fort witnessed control struggles among the Bahmani Sultanate, Nizam Shah, Mughals, Marathas, and finally the British. The fort is notable for several caves, water cisterns, carved inscriptions, a grand palace ruin called Rang Mahal, and tombs, including that of a European officer.
