Gappo Park
Aomori, Japan, Japan
Gappo Park is a rare seaside urban park in Aomori City, Japan, located 20 minutes by bus from JR Aomori Station and facing Aomori Bay on the eastern edge of the city.
This 17-hectare (42-acre) park is nationally unique in Japan because it combines cherry blossom viewing, sports, and swimming all in one downtown location, making it a beloved year-round retreat for local residents. The park was designed in 1881 by former Hirosaki Domain official gardener Eisaku Mizuhara and his brother Mijuro Kakizaki, who donated materials to build it, and it was completed in 1894–1895 before being donated to Aomori City.
In spring, approximately 670 cherry trees of multiple varieties—including Someiyoshino, weeping cherry, Satozakura, and Oyama cherry—bloom beautifully, drawing around 150,000 visitors for the Aomori Spring Festival and making it one of Japan's Top 100 City Parks. During summer, the park's large white sand beach along Mutsu Bay becomes a popular swimming spot that attracts many families, with the scenic view of blooming sakura against pine trees and deep blue ocean.
The park also features an Aomori City Baseball Stadium, tennis courts, an unpaved jogging course, a small zoo with small animals and birds, a playground, a tea pavilion, and a 400-year-old black pine that once grew alongside the historic Ōshū Kaidō road. Another unique feature is the 31 stone monuments scattered throughout, including haiku and poem monuments by Matsuo Basho, a monument to Japan's first perfect game in professional baseball, and various busts. Admission is free, the park is open every day around the clock, and it offers parking for 164 vehicles, making it easily accessible for visitors.
