Verified Garh Doul Archeological Site

Tezpur, Assam, India

Garh Doul archaeological site, located about 7 kilometers from Tezpur in Assam's Sonitpur district, dates back to the 7th and 8th centuries CE.

It is a fortified site with reinforced ramparts covering an area of approximately 250 by 250 meters. The site includes two large brick mounds believed to be the foundations of ancient temple plinths constructed using fired bricks and local lime-based mortar. According to local legend rooted in the Kalika Purana, the fortress was built by the mythical king Banasura to imprison his daughter Usha.

Archaeological findings suggest Garh Doul was an important regional power base with defensive structures such as moats and gateways, likely serving both military and sacred purposes. Despite its historical significance, the ruins remain partly unexplored, and conservation efforts continue to preserve this protected monument.

The site is surrounded by notable tanks and offers insights into early medieval urbanism and architectural expertise in Assam.
