Verified Gaspar Dias Fort Cannon

Panaji, Goa, India

The Gaspar Dias Fort Cannon in Panaji, Goa, is a historical relic from the fort that once stood near Miramar Beach.

The fort, named after Gaspar Dias, a Portuguese nobleman who owned the land, was constructed beginning in 1598 under the governorship of Viceroy Dom Francisco da Gama, the great-grandson of Vasco da Gama. It served as a defensive structure against threats from the Dutch and other enemies during Portuguese rule.

The fort experienced significant events, including a revolt in 1835 that led to its destruction by the military, followed by a partial restoration in 1842. Later, by the late 19th century, the fort was repurposed as a sanatorium for convalescing soldiers, but over time it fell into neglect and was eventually razed, leaving no visible traces today except for the cannon situated at the traffic circle at Miramar Beach.

This cannon is the sole surviving symbol of the fort's past, marking the site of a once important defensive installation that played a key role in Goa's colonial history.
