Gavilgarh Fort
Lawada, Maharashtra, India
Gavilgarh Fort, also known as Gawilghur, is located near Lawada in Maharashtra’s Amravati district and is a historic mountain fortress dating back to the 12th century, when it was initially built by a local Gawli king of the Yadava dynasty.
The fort, originally constructed as a mud fort, was later rebuilt in stone by Ahmad Shah Wali of the Bahmani Sultanate in 1425, and has seen several restorations by successive rulers including the Imadshahi and Nizamshahi dynasties, and later the Marathas. The fort is strategically divided into an outer and inner fort separated by a steep ravine, with the outer fort serving as a decoy to confuse attackers before reaching the heavily fortified inner citadel.
It features seven stone gateways richly inscribed in Persian, two large water tanks that ensured a sustained water supply during sieges, remnants of a mosque built in the 16th century with intricate stone latticework, and strong defensive walls with bastions and mounted cannons.
The fort’s architecture displays a mix of Islamic and Hindu elements, with detailed stone carvings including animals and deities, demonstrating its symbolic and strategic importance through centuries of conflict. Known for its formidable defenses and panoramic views of the surrounding Satpura ranges and Melghat Tiger Reserve, Gavilgarh remains an impressive example of medieval fortification engineering in the region.
