Ghosalgad Fort
Ghosale, Maharashtra, India
Ghosalgad Fort, located near the village of Ghosale in Maharashtra's Raigad district, sits at about 3,200 feet above sea level and stretches narrowly along a ridge about 20 meters wide.
Its builder is unknown, but it came under the control of the Adilshah of Bijapur in the 16th century before being captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1648. The fort was strategically important as it oversaw trade routes from the Maval region to nearby sea ports and served as a watchtower and refuge during conflicts involving the Siddhi of Janjira and Maratha forces.
Architecturally, it has strong stone walls, a north-facing gate, narrow fortifications along the ridge, water cisterns carved into the rock, and ruins of temples including those dedicated to Bhavani and Ganesh. The fort also features an escape gate and cannon remnants, and it offers sweeping views of the surrounding landscape including nearby forts like Talagad.
The trek to Ghosalgad is popular among history enthusiasts and adventurers, with the fort retaining much of its natural charm and historical significance.
