Giant’s Causeway

County Antrim, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

The Giant’s Causeway is a famous natural wonder in County Antrim on Northern Ireland’s north coast, consisting of about 40,000 interlocking black basalt columns that step from the cliff foot into the sea. Formed by intense volcanic activity roughly 60 million years ago when the lava cooled slowly and cracked into regular hexagonal shapes, the tallest columns reach about 39 feet (12 meters) high with cliffs up to 92 feet (28 meters) thick. According to Irish legend, the giant Finn McCool built this causeway as a pathway to battle his Scottish rival, Benandonner, who tore it apart while fleeing, leaving only the Irish section intact. Designated as Northern Ireland’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, the attraction draws over one million visitors yearly who walk the columns, explore trails, and visit the interactive Visitor Centre to learn about its geology and myths. Managed by the National Trust, it is also a nature reserve home to seabirds and part of a wider coastline offering scenic walking routes for all abilities.
