Verified Gingee Fort

Gingee, Tamil Nadu, India

Gingee Fort, located in Tamil Nadu, India, is a historic hilltop fortress built around the 9th century by the Chola dynasty and later developed by the Vijayanagar Empire in the 13th century.

The fort complex spans three hills—Krishnagiri, Rajagiri, and Chandrayandurg—each with its own citadel, connected by massive walls and fortified with bastions, gateways, and moats. It features important structures like the seven-story Kalyana Mahal (marriage hall), granaries, prison cells, and temples including one dedicated to the goddess Chenjiamman.

The fort was fortified further by the Marathas under Shivaji in the 17th century and resisted sieges by Mughals and other powers. Architecturally, Gingee Fort blends traditional Dravidian styles with influences from the Vijayanagara, Maratha, and later European occupants, using locally sourced laterite and granite stones. Known as the "Troy of the East," it is famed for its strategic design, robust construction, water management through perennial springs, and panoramic views, making it a significant cultural and military monument in southern India.
