Verified Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion)

Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan

Ginkaku-ji, also known as the Silver Pavilion, is a famous Zen temple in the eastern part of Kyoto, Japan. Its official name is Jishō-ji, which means "Temple of Shining Mercy." The temple is located at the foot of Kyoto’s eastern mountains and is admired for its calm and beautiful natural surroundings.

The Silver Pavilion was built in 1482 as a retirement villa for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa. He was inspired by his grandfather’s Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji) but wanted his own peaceful retreat. Although Yoshimasa planned to cover the pavilion’s exterior with silver foil, this was never done. The wooden building remains unadorned, and this simple appearance has become one of its most special features. The name “Silver Pavilion” was only given later to contrast it with the Golden Pavilion.

After Yoshimasa’s death in 1490, the villa was converted into a Zen temple as he wished. The temple and its gardens became a center for art and culture in Kyoto, especially for the tea ceremony, flower arranging, poetry, and Noh theater. Many of these traditions are known as “Higashiyama Culture” and are important parts of Japanese history.

Ginkaku-ji is known for its beautiful gardens. There is a famous dry landscape garden (karesansui) featuring a large white sand cone called the "Sea of Silver Sand" and another mound symbolizing Mount Fuji. The gardens also have moss, pine trees, and peaceful walkways that encourage quiet thought and meditation. Visitors can enjoy the views of the garden, ponds, and surrounding hills as they walk around the temple grounds.

The temple’s buildings are built in a style that is both simple and elegant. The two-story main structure, with dark wood and a statue of a phoenix on its roof, blends Japanese and Chinese architectural influences. Other buildings include teahouses and halls for worship and contemplation.
