Verified Gobindgarh Fort

Amritsar, Punjab, India

Gobindgarh Fort in Amritsar, Punjab, is a historic military fortress originally built in the 18th century by Gujjar Singh Bhangi, a chieftain of the Bhangi Misl, and later captured and enhanced by Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Named after the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, the fort was designed to defend the city of Amritsar and the revered Golden Temple from invasions, especially Afghan attacks. It features a robust defense system with concentric walls, a wide moat, bastions, gates, and a circular path inside the innermost enclosure.

The fort also housed the famous Zamzama cannon and served as a treasury and military stronghold for Ranjit Singh's Sikh Empire. Architecturally, the fort blends Sikh, Mughal, and European military styles, with notable features including the Toshakhana (treasury), bastions, and gateways.

During British rule, further modifications were made, including the addition of the Darbar Hall and Anglo-Sikh bungalow. Today, it is a cultural and historical center exhibiting artifacts, reenactments, light and sound shows, and offers panoramic views, representing over three centuries of Punjab's vibrant history and heritage.
