Golconda Fort
Hyderabad, Telangana, India
Golconda Fort is a massive hilltop fortress in the western part of Hyderabad, about 9 km from Hussain Sagar Lake, built originally as a mud fort in the 12th century and later expanded into a grand granite stronghold by the Bahmani Sultans and then the Qutb Shahi dynasty. It served as the principal capital of the Qutb Shahi kings from the 14th to the 17th century and is famous for its huge ramparts, eight gateways, and vast complex spread across several kilometers of rocky terrain. The fort was once a major diamond‑trading center, renowned for “Golconda diamonds” including legendary stones like the Koh‑i‑Noor, and its ruins still showcase palaces, mosques, stables, magazines, and cleverly engineered water‑supply and acoustic systems. Captured by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1687 after a long siege, the site today stands as one of India’s finest medieval fortress complexes and a popular historical and tourist landmark on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
