Verified Hachimanyama Castle Ruins

Omihachiman, Shiga, Japan, Japan

Hachimanyama Castle Ruins are the remains of a late 16th‑century mountaintop castle on Mount Hachimanyama (about 272 meters high) in Ōmihachiman, Shiga Prefecture, on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa.

The castle was built in 1585 under orders from Toyotomi Hideyoshi by his nephew and heir Toyotomi Hidetsugu, who used materials from the nearby Azuchi Castle and moved the functions of Azuchi’s city to the new castle town of Hachiman (now Ōmihachiman) below the mountain.

It was designed as a grand fortress with a main keep on the summit and surrounding baileys, but after Hideyoshi became suspicious of Hidetsugu, the latter was forced to commit suicide in 1595 and the castle was abandoned, eventually falling into ruin. Today only stone walls, terraces, and some moat features survive, while the former main bailey now houses Zuiryūji Temple, which was relocated there in 1961 as a memorial to Hidetsugu by his mother.

Visitors can reach the summit by the 4‑minute Hachimanyama Ropeway, then walk woodland trails to see the temple, the remaining stone ramparts, and several lookout points that offer panoramic views of Lake Biwa, the Nishinō Sea, the former castle town, and the surrounding plains.
