Verified Harajō Castle Ruins

Minamishimabara, Nagasaki, Japan, Japan

Harajō Castle Ruins (also called Hara Castle) is the remains of a 15th–17th century castle on a hill at the tip of the Shimabara Peninsula in Minamishimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, and today it is a free, open historic park linked to Japan’s hidden Christian history and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Originally built in 1496 by Arima Takazumi as a subsidiary of Hinoe Castle and later rebuilt in 1604, the castle became the final stronghold of the 1637 Shimabara–Amakusa Rebellion, a massive uprising of peasants—many of them Christians—against heavy taxes and religious persecution, which was crushed after more than a year of defense by huge shogunate forces.

Only low stone walls, gate foundations, and the outlines of the former baileys survive, with the main bailey (honmaru) turned into a small park containing a memorial monument to the rebellion and a bronze statue of Amakusa Shiro, the young rebel leader executed after the castle fell. The site was designated a National Historic Site in 1938 and, in 2018, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing “Hidden Christian Sites.

The Nagasaki Region,” reflecting its role as evidence of both the flourishing of Christianity in the area and the violent suppression that led Japanese Christians to hide their faith for centuries. Visitors can walk among the terraced stone ruins with clear views over the Ariake Sea, and nearby is the Arima Christian Heritage Museum, which explains the local Christian history and the rebellion in more detail.
