Harcourt Arboretum
Nuneham Courtenay, United Kingdom
Harcourt Arboretum near Nuneham Courtenay in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, originated from an 1835 commission by Archbishop Edward Venables-Vernon-Harcourt for landscape designer William Sawrey Gilpin to create an eight-acre pinetum centered around the growing collection of conifers.
The arboretum is a satellite of the University of Oxford Botanic Garden and was acquired by the university in 1947, officially becoming part of the botanic garden in 1963. It spans about 150 acres and features a mix of North American conifers and other trees from around the world, some dating back to Victorian planting schemes including giant redwoods and monkey puzzle trees.
The grounds include semi-natural lowland grassland, woodlands, flowering meadows, and historic features like the “Emperor Heads” carved stone figures originally from the Sheldonian Theatre. The arboretum is noted for its botanical diversity, conservation value, and picturesque landscapes with seasonal displays of azaleas, rhododendrons, and wild bluebells, along with peacocks roaming freely.
It is open to the public year-round and serves as both an educational resource and a place for recreation and natural heritage appreciation.
