Hataya Castle (Hataya-jō) was a mountain fortress built in the Sengoku period in Dewa Province, now the town of Yamanobe in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan.

It was strategically positioned on steep slopes and ridges, using the natural terrain as part of its defensive system rather than relying only on walls and towers. The castle is best known for the Siege of Hataya in 1600, when a small garrison of about 300 men under Eguchi Gohei, loyal to the Mogami clan, was attacked by a much larger force of around 20,000 led by Naoe Kanetsugu during the turmoil before the decisive Battle of Sekigahara.

Despite the overwhelming odds, the defenders held out briefly in a resistance that became famous in local chronicles for its bravery, though the castle was ultimately overrun after a short siege. Today, the site remains as a historic mountain fortification that visitors can approach from Yamanobe, with local facilities offering information about its role in regional conflicts and the way Japanese military builders integrated natural landscape into their defenses.
