Hemagudda Fort
Hemagudda, Karnataka, India
Hemagudda Fort is a 14th-century hilltop fortress hidden among rocky hills in Hemagudda village, Gangavati taluk of Koppal district, Karnataka, India, about 12 km from Gangavati and accessible only through a narrow eastern gateway flanked by bastions.
Built as a strategic hideout for Kanakagiri kingdom's Palegar rulers from the 15th to 18th centuries, it sheltered rebels like Peetambari Baharipidda Nayak from Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1688 and Hire Nayaka against the Nizam of Hyderabad, who failed to locate or conquer it despite prolonged sieges.
Inside the walls lie ancient temples to Shiva-Parvati, Kanakachala, Lakshmi-Narasimha, and Durga Devi, constructed between 1510 and 1533 by Udacha Nayaka, along with rock-cut water tanks, a granary, Hanuman shrine, and megalithic remnants amid scenic climbs popular for trekking. The site hosts a vibrant annual Dasara fair at the Durga temple, though neglect has left much in ruins, drawing adventurers to its rugged, history-rich landscape.
