Hibiya Kadan Ofuna Flower Center, also known as Ofuna Botanical Gardens, is a serene botanical garden located in Kamakura, Japan, established in 1961 on the site of the former Kanagawa National Agricultural Experiment Station.
The garden is renowned for its vast collection of about 5,300 to 5,700 plant species, including roses, water lilies, peonies, irises, camellias, wisteria, and the rare “green sakura” cherry blossoms. It features about 1,200 rose bushes in a beautifully designed rose garden with roughly 370 varieties and a field of peonies with around 200 types, many developed locally and historically significant for Japan’s horticulture.
Visitors enjoy seasonal blooms year-round, with highlights including tulips and peonies in spring, hydrangeas and irises in early summer, lotuses and water lilies in summer, and cosmos and roses in autumn.
The garden also includes a photogenic greenhouse housing tropical and subtropical plants such as orchids and bougainvillea. Facilities include a small café serving light meals, and the garden is a popular spot for photography, nature walks, and seasonal festivals, embodying a deep cultural connection with horticulture and local botanical heritage.
