Himi Seaside Botanical Garden
Himi, Japan, Japan
Himi Seaside Botanical Garden, now also called Himi City Seaside Park, is Japan's only botanical garden specializing in coastal plants, located at 3583 Yanagida in Himi City, Toyama, beside the scenic Matsudae‑no‑Nagahama white‑sand beach mentioned in the ancient Man'yōshū poetry anthology. The 6.4‑hectare park opened in 1996 in a striking brutalist concrete building designed by architect Itsuko Hasegawa and was renovated to become an all‑weather facility in 2021, featuring display gardens, greenhouses with mangrove water tanks, tropical and subtropical plants, climbing plants, and seaside plants from across Japan, plus an insect exhibit. It is open daily 9:00–17:00 (until 16:30 from November to February; last admission 30 minutes before closing) and closed every Tuesday except July and August, the day after a holiday (unless it falls on Saturday, Sunday, or a holiday), and during New Year holidays (December 29–January 3), with admission of 500 yen for adults (high school and older) and 300 yen for children aged 4 and up (elementary and junior high), free for under 4. The site also offers indoor and outdoor playground equipment for children, a coastal promenade garden, lawn areas, walking paths, and views of the Sea of Japan, making it a family‑friendly destination beyond plants.
