Himmatgad
Maharashtra, India
Himmatgad, also known as Bankot Fort and formerly called Fort Victoria, is a historic fort situated on a hillock near the confluence of the Savitri River and the Arabian Sea in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra.
Originally recorded in ancient times as Mandargiri, it changed hands multiple times throughout history—captured by the Portuguese from Adil Shah of Bijapur in 1548, won by the Maratha Koli Admiral Kanhoji Angre around 1700 who named it Himmatgad, and later involved in conflicts between the Marathas, British, and local rulers.
The British took control in the mid-18th century and renamed it Fort Victoria but eventually returned it to the Peshwas due to its lack of economic viability. The fort served as a strategic lookout point and defense site with notable features including guard gates, water tanks, and cannons.
Today, it is known for its picturesque views and peaceful environment, offering visitors a tranquil spot to appreciate both natural beauty and historical significance. The fort area is well-maintained and accessible, making it a favored destination for those interested in history and scenic landscapes.
