Hinglajgarh
Madhya Pradesh, India
Hinglajgarh Fort, situated in Navali village in Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur district, has a history dating back to the Maurya period and later flourished under the Paramara dynasty during the 12th century.
It was an important strategic fort with natural defenses including a semicircular layout extending nearly 10 kilometers, deep trenches, and the Chambal River flowing on two sides. Over time, the fort was ruled by various dynasties including the Hadas, Chandrawats, and eventually the Maratha Empire under Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar, who renovated the fort and temples dedicated to Hinglaj Mata, Shiva, Rama, and Hanuman.
The fort has four main gates facing east and west, a large water reservoir called Surajkund, and various notable buildings such as the Rani Mahal and the court (kacheri). Though never a permanent capital, it served as a shelter and stronghold during centuries of conflict and is tied to local legends, including warrior-priests and ancient religious traditions.
The fort today showcases a blend of architectural and cultural heritage, reflecting the layered history of Malwa and the surrounding regions.
