Hooli Fort
Hooli, Karnataka, India
Hooli Fort crowns a flat-topped sandstone hill overlooking the historic village of Hooli in Karnataka’s Belagavi district, where Chalukya-era temples nestle at its base.
Likely built between the 12th and 17th centuries to protect the settlement below, the fort today survives as stepped ramparts of weathered stone, a solitary entrance gate flanked by two ruined bastions and a natural rock cistern once used for water storage. From its rocky crest visitors can gaze over the patchwork of fields and sacred shrines that give Hooli its nickname “village of 101 temples”.
