Iwakuni Castle is a modern replica of a historic mountain castle located in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, sitting on Shiroyama Hill about 200 meters above the Nishiki River and the famous Kintaikyo Bridge.

The original castle was built between 1601 and 1608 by Kikkawa Hiroie, a retainer of the Mōri clan, but was dismantled just seven years later in 1615 under the Tokugawa shogunate’s “One Castle Per Province” order, making it one of the shortest-lived major castles in Japanese history. The current four-story keep, reconstructed in 1962 from ferro-concrete, preserves the castle’s memory and function as a local landmark and museum, displaying samurai swords, armor, weapons, and historical models including one of the Kintaikyo Bridge.

Visitors can reach the castle by a scenic ropeway or by hiking mountain trails, and from the top observation deck they can see the river, Kintaikyo Bridge, Iwakuni town, islands of the Seto Inland Sea, and on clear days even Miyajima and Shikoku. The site also includes preserved stone walls from the original fortress, and the castle has been recognized as one of the 100 Great Castles of Japan, blending historical significance with panoramic views of Iwakuni’s natural and cultural landscape.
