Jaigarh Fort

Jaigarh Fort, also known as the “Fort of Victory,” is a massive, well-preserved military fortress perched on the Cheel ka Teela (Hill of Eagles) in the Aravalli range, about 15 km from Jaipur and just above the famous Amber Fort and Maota Lake.

It was commissioned in 1726 by Mirza Raja Jai Singh II, the Rajput ruler who founded Jaipur, and was designed as a defensive bastion to guard Amber Fort, with its name reflecting this purpose: “Jai” means victory and “garh” means fort. The fort stretches roughly 3 km in length and 1 km in width, with thick red sandstone walls rising about 400 meters above Amber functional military architecture rather than ornate palace buildings, featuring gates like the Dungar Darwaza, watchtowers, barracks, water reservoirs, and gardens set within a compact, fortified layout.

Historically, Jaigarh was a major cannon foundry during the Mughal period because of abundant local iron ore, and it is here that the world’s largest cannon on wheels, the Jaivana, was manufactured in 1720; this huge cannon, weighing over 50 tons and capable of firing a 100-pound ball more than 35 km, remains one of the fort’s most celebrated attractions.
