The fort’s name means "fort on water," reflecting its strategic location as the river creates a natural defense, making access difficult for enemies. The fort once had seven entry gates, strong walls, a palace, and a cellar, though most of these structures are now in ruins.
Historical remnants include tombs of the fort's rulers, the Sangameshwara Matha, and the Yellamma Temple. The site combines natural beauty with a rich historical backdrop, linked to various rulers and serving as an important defensive structure during its time.
