Jalore Fort
Jalore, Rajasthan, India
Jalore Fort, also known as Sonalgarh or Swarnagiri (“golden mountain”), is a historic hill fort dominating the town of Jalore in southwestern Rajasthan, famously regarded in local tradition as one of the most unconquerable forts of India and often called the “sentinel of the Marusthal heights”.
Built between the 8th and 10th centuries by the Paramara Rajputs, it sits atop a steep granite hill about 336 meters (around 1,100 feet) high, giving it a commanding view of the town and making it strategically formidable, and it was one of the nine “Maru” forts of the desert region under the Paramaras in the 10th century.
The fort is entered through a winding north-facing path that leads to one of four main gates—Suraj Pol, Dhruv Pol, Siroh Pol, and Bal Pol—and its architecture reflects traditional Hindu craftsmanship with later Islamic and Jain influences, including structures like the 16th-century Killa Masjid, ancient Shiva, Ashapuri, Ambamata, and Hanuman temples, and a beautifully carved white-marble Jain temple of Lord Adinath.
