Jamner is a historic town on the banks of the Girna River in Jalgaon district of Maharashtra’s Khandesh region, located about 20 km east of the city of Jalgaon. Its origins date to the medieval period when it was a key trading hub under dynasties such as the Satavahanas, Rashtrakutas and later the Maratha Empire, and remnants of a sixteenth-century Mughal-built fort still mark its past.

With a population of 46,762 in 2011, Jamner exhibits a high literacy rate of 83 percent and a sex ratio of 927 females per 1,000 males, reflecting a balanced and educated community. The town serves as the administrative centre for its taluka, overseeing 9,614 households and providing water, sewerage and road infrastructure, while its economy relies on agriculture—especially banana cultivation—small-scale trade and services.

Politically, Jamner has been represented by longtime MLA and former Maharashtra water resources minister Girish Mahajan since 1996, underscoring its local importance in state governance.
