Jawlya Fort

Jawlya Fort (also spelled Javlya or Jawalya) is a historic hill fort in the Satmala mountain range of Nashik district in Maharashtra, India, and it is known as the eastern twin of the nearby Ravlya Fort, with both forts sharing a large hill plateau and collectively called the “Rola‑Jola” or twin forts.

The fort lies about 43–50 km from Nashik city, near the base villages of Babapur and Mulane in Dindori taluka, and reaches roughly 4,000–4,300 feet (about 1,090–1,300 m) above sea level, offering expansive views of surrounding forts such as Dhodap, Ikhara, Kanhergad and Indrai.

Historically, Jawlya was built to guard the important trade route from Khandesh to Nashik; it was captured by Aliwardi Khan for the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1636, taken by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1670, besieged by Diler Khan in 1671 but defended by Maratha forces, later passed to Mahabat Khan, the Peshwas, and finally to the British in 1818, after which Captain Briggs deliberately destroyed its steps and fortification walls in 1819 to make ascent difficult. 

The fort’s main structures include a single gate carved directly through a vertical rock face with a Ganesh idol, rock-cut water cisterns, a large water tank that can retain water for years, a Parsi inscription mentioning the victories of Aliwardi Khan, and remnants of bastions and walls, while the trek to Jawlya is considered moderately to hard and usually takes around 2 hours from Mulane or Babapur, with shelter available on the plateau but no permanent water source on the fort itself.
