Jhansi Fort
Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, India
Jhansi Fort, also known as Jhansi ka Qila, is a historic hilltop fortress in the heart of Jhansi city, Uttar Pradesh, India, built on a rocky outcrop called Bangira or Bangra in the early 17th century by Raja Bir Singh Ju Deo of Orchha.
The fort sprawls over roughly 15 acres, runs about 312 metres long and 225 metres wide, and originally had ten gates, serving as a major stronghold for the Bundela rulers and later the Marathas before becoming the political and military centre of the Princely State of Jhansi.
It is most famous as the seat of Rani Lakshmibai, who led fierce resistance from its ramparts during the 1857 War of Independence, and today the fort houses monuments, temples, a small dungeon, a park, and a museum‑like collection of sculptures and relics, drawing visitors who want to combine panoramic city views with a tangible sense of Bundelkhand’s royal and rebel history.
