Junagarh Fort
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India
Junagarh Fort in Bikaner, Rajasthan, was built between 1588 and 1593 by Raja Rai Singh, a prominent ruler and general under Mughal Emperor Akbar.
Unlike many Rajasthan forts, it stands on flat land rather than a hill and is known for being never conquered in battle except briefly by Kamran Mirza, son of Babur. The fort covers a large area with strong red sandstone walls, surrounded originally by a deep moat. It features 37 bastions and seven gates, including the main entrances Karan Pol and Suraj Pol.
The architecture is a rich blend of Rajput, Mughal, and Gujarati styles, with intricately carved marble and sandstone interiors, beautiful palaces, temples, and pavilions within the complex. Many generations of Bikaner rulers added to the fort, making it a vast display of art, culture, and royal heritage.
Noteworthy structures like the Karan Mahal and the ornate Durbar Hall highlight its architectural grandeur, reflecting the fusion of artistic traditions and the formidable history of Rajasthan's royal legacy.
