Junglee Jaigad Fort
Maharashtra, India
Junglee Jaigad Fort, located in the Patan taluka of Satara district, Maharashtra, is perched on a hilly spur of the Sahyadri range near the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary.
The fort has a history tied to the Maratha rulers and the British Raj, having been controlled by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and later seeing disputes among Maratha factions, including the Peshwas and Pant Pratinidhis. The fort was ultimately conquered by the British in 1818.
The 1967 Koynanagar earthquake caused significant damage, including destruction of the well and the access road, making the fort more difficult to reach. Today, in ruins, it offers a glimpse into the region’s Maratha past and is surrounded by dense forest rich in wildlife, making it a serene destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
