Kakunodate Castle Remains
Semboku, Akita, Japan, Japan
Kakunodate Castle Remains, located on Mount Furushiro in the town of Kakunodate within Semboku City in Akita Prefecture, Japan, are the surviving ruins of a medieval mountaintop castle that once served as the stronghold of the Tozawa and later Ashina clans.
Originally founded in the 15th or early 16th century, the castle was expanded in the early 1600s when Ashina Yoshikatsu became the lord and established a planned castle town to the south of the mountain, but the entire castle was demolished in 1620 under the Tokugawa shogunate’s “one castle per domain” policy.
Forested pathways that follow the old defensive lines, offering visitors a quiet hike through trees and a panoramic view over the historic samurai town below. Though the castle itself is gone, its legacy is visible in Kakunodate’s well-preserved samurai district, traditional houses, and centuries-old cherry trees, making the castle remains a modest but meaningful complement to the town’s broader Edo-period atmosphere.
