Kamalgad Fort
Kondhavali bk, Maharashtra, India
Kamalgad Fort, locally associated with Kondhavali (also written Kondhawali) in the Wai area of Satara district, Maharashtra, is a square hill fort perched about 1,375 metres above sea level on a rocky spur surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Dhom Dam.
Its exact origin is unknown, but it is known to have been in Maratha control before and during Shivaji’s campaigns, later being administered from Bijapur, and it surrendered to a British detachment in April 1818, after which the fort was reportedly used under the British to execute prisoners of war.
The summit is only about 3–4 acres, heavily forested, and unusually lacks walls, gateways, or typical fort buildings; its most distinctive feature is a deep, rock-cut well or hole (around 18–20 feet) that still holds water, which in old accounts is said to have had recesses where criminals were placed to choose between starvation and drowning.
Today Kamalgad is a medium-to-difficult one-day trek from base villages like Kondhavali, Vasole or Nandagane, offering dense jungle trails, steep cliffs and striking 360-degree views of the Dam, Krishna and Waali rivers, and the Mahabaleshwar–Panchgani hills, while remaining relatively off the mainstream tourist circuit despite its visibility from routes like the Pasarani Ghat and appearances in films such as Swades and Being Cyrus.
