Kameyama Castle
Kameyama, Japan, Japan
Kameyama Castle, located in Kameyama City in northern Mie Prefecture, Japan, is a historic hilltop-and-plains castle that originated in 1265 when Seki Sanetada built the original Wakayama (old Kameyama) Castle to guard the Suzuka Pass on the important Tōkaidō road.
Over the centuries, the castle was rebuilt and relocated within the same area, with the current form taking shape around 1590 after Okamoto Munenori moved the main structures southeast, and it later served as the seat of the Ishikawa clan, daimyō of Ise-Kameyama Domain, during the late Edo period.
Today, the castle does not have its original main keep, but other buildings and restored structures remain, and the site is maintained as Kameyama Castle Park, recognized as a Mie Prefectural Historic Site, with easy access on foot from JR Kameyama Station on the Kansai Line. The castle is also known by the poetic name “Kochō-jō” (“Castle of the Powder Butterfly”) and continues to be a quiet, locally valued historical landmark rather than a large commercial tourist attraction.
